toric intraocular lenses | Susskind & Almallah Eye AssociatesAn intraocular lens (IOL) is a special clear, artificial lens which is implanted in the eye to replace the eye’s natural lens. These IOLs are generally used during cataract surgery to replace the cloudy lens that cataracts produces, but a special IOL, called the toric intraocular lens, can help correct astigmatism, myopia (nearsightedness), as well as cataract. At Susskind & Almallah Eye Associates, our experienced physicians take great care in assessing and treating your eyes so that you can see the world clearly.

If you are interested in learning more about toric intraocular lenses, contact us at 732-349-5622 to schedule an eye exam today. We have four convenient locations in Toms River, Brick, Barnegat, and Manalapan Township, New Jersey.

Toric Intraocular Lenses for Cataract and Astigmatism

Patients may not realize that new advances in lens technology allows for the correction of astigmatism during cataract surgery. The toric intraocular lens is designed to correct both.

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure where an eye surgeon removes the clouded lens of the eye and replaces it with a monofocal intraocular lens. If you have an astigmatism, it is possible that you will still have blurred and distorted vision after surgery because the standard IOL cannot correct corneal astigmatism, leaving you with the possibility of still needing glasses or contacts.

Astigmatism is when the front surface of the eye (cornea) is not curved properly—generally one half is flatter than the other with one area steeper than it should be. Astigmatism is fairly common and occurs in children and adults. It is usually present at birth, but can also develop after an eye operation or an injury to the eye.

If you have a reasonable amount of astigmatism, our physicians and staff will discuss a toric lens implant with you.

Benefits of Toric Intraocular Lenses

For those with astigmatism and who need cataract surgery, toric lenses offer advantages over other intraocular lenses. These include:

  • Reduces or eliminates corneal astigmatism at the same time it corrects cataracts, typically without additional surgeries
  • Improved distance vision
  • Typically less dependent on glasses or contacts for distance vision
  • Filters out harmful ultraviolet light
