Refractive lens exchange, also called clear lens exchange or lens replacement surgery, is an effective way to correct a wide range of visual issues, including presbyopia. With this surgery, your eye’s natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) to improve the clarity and sharpness of your vision.
At Susskind & Almallah Eye Associates, we are proud to offer refractive lens exchange to individuals who are over 50 years old. This procedure is a viable way to achieve clear vision, often without the need for glasses or contacts.
To discover if clear lens exchange is right for you, please call 732-349-5622 to schedule a consultation with our experienced ophthalmologists. We proudly serve patients from across New Jersey at our modern Manalapan Township, Toms River, Brick, and Barnegat locations.
What is Clear Lens Exchange?
Clear lens exchange involves the same procedural steps that are used to treat cataracts. However, clear lens exchange is performed on older adults who do not have cataracts but are experiencing other visual issues.
Clear lens exchange can treat:
During the surgery, our skilled ophthalmologists safely remove the natural lens of the eye using the Catalys® Precision Laser System. The lens is a thin, transparent structure behind the pupil that helps focus light rays on to the retina.
Once the natural lens is removed, it is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. These premium modern implants can correct a wide array of visual errors, typically eliminating the need for glasses and contacts.
Different IOL’s offer different visual outcomes. For example, some lenses are specifically designed to treat astigmatism. Other lenses, like the Crystalens® IOL, closely mimic your eye’s natural ability to focus on objects at various distances. These lenses can eliminate the need for glasses altogether, except when they may be needed to read very fine print.
Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange
Refractive lens exchange offers many advantages when performed on patients who are good candidates. This procedure is often an excellent choice for older adults because it can help correct common refractive vision errors as well as problems with close vision.
The benefits of clear lens exchange include:
- It is a safe procedure
- Age-related vision loss can be improved
- It can often be performed on patients who are not candidates for other vision surgeries
Our ophthalmologists will conduct a thorough eye examination to determine if you might be able to benefit from refractive lens exchange. For many patients, this procedure is a way to regain their clear, youthful vision.
Clear Lens Exchange vs. LASIK
LASIK is a very effective eye surgery, but it only corrects distance vision. LASIK does not treat presbyopia. Presbyopia is a normal age-related visual condition that makes it hard to focus on close-up images. It begins to affect nearly everyone sometime after age 40.
The only way that LASIK can correct presbyopia is if a patient elects to have monovision LASIK. The idea behind monovision LASIK is that by surgically fixing the distance vision of one eye, while leaving the other slightly nearsighted, a patient will be able to see at all distances.
While this approach often accomplishes that goal, there is a bit of a compromise involved. There is frequently a slight loss in visual clarity after a monovision LASIK procedure.
Clear lens exchange offers an alternative to monovision LASIK by allowing patients to correct presbyopia and refractive errors while maintaining visual clarity. Most IOL’s allow both eyes to focus on a variety of distances.
