Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Information

Accepting New Patients Near Toms River, Brick, Manchester, Stafford & Throughout New Jersey

Our goal is to provide you with information about all the phases of blepharoplasty. Susskind & Almallah Eye Associates will attempt to provide you with the resources that may assist you prior to undergoing cosmetic eyelid surgery. We hope to help you better understand the eyelids, their contribution to the facial appearance and blepharoplasty as a procedure. The information contained on our website cannot replace a thorough evaluation by your surgeon, however, it may help you in preparation for your consultation for an eyelid procedure.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the form and sometimes function of the eyes by modifying the anatomy of the surrounding structures. It commonly is done for both the upper and lower lids. Fat and skin is removed or repositioned, muscle is reduced or tightened, and tendons are supported. Although most commonly performed for cosmetic reasons, blepharoplasty can also improve peripheral vision.

If you are considering eyelid surgery, an analysis with Dr. Almallah of the eye region, upper eyelids, lower eyelids, and an explanation of the preparation and after-care is recommended.

We find that a thorough understanding of blepharoplasty even before the consultation greatly enhances patient comfort with this operation. A patient who is informed about this surgery will have better communication with the surgeon before and after eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic facial procedures in the U.S. An improved comprehension of eyelid surgery makes the patient a partner in the decision making with the surgeon.

If you have droopy upper eyelids or if you experienced a loss of definition over the years, you may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty. If you noticed puffy lower eyelids with dark circles underneath and wrinkles, you may be a good candidate for a lower lid blepharoplasty. Often, a tired and droopy look can be improved with eyelid surgery.

The procedure is performed in our surgery center with local anesthesia and lasts 45 minutes to a few hours depending on how much work is done. Incisions are made along the eyelids in inconspicuous places (in the creases of the upper lids, and just below the lashes on the lower lids). The surgeon removes excess tissue through these incisions and then stitches them closed with fine sutures. In the case that no skin needs to be removed, the surgeon will likely perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, where the incision is made inside the lower eyelid and there are no visible scars.

Blepharoplasty can be combined with BOTOX® treatments to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow's feet or dark circles under the eyes.
