Our ophthalmologists are committed to learning and sharing the newest eye care innovations. In line with this objective, we are proud to announce that Dr. Omar Almallah recently returned from the 2021 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting.
Held from July 23 to 25 in Las Vegas, Nevada, this meeting featured instructional courses designed to help surgeons enhance their patients’ visual outcomes and quality of life. Dr. Almallah served as a session moderator and course instructor during this years’ meeting.
The session he moderated was about presbyopia-correcting multifocal and trifocal IOLs. Using intraocular lenses to correct age-related farsightedness is a very contemporary topic, and the session drew many attendees from around the world. These are new lenses that have been introduced within the last two years that allow patients to have good vision following cataract surgery without the need for glasses. Patients generally enjoy distance vision, intermediate vision (needed for using the computer), and close-up vision for reading in most lighting conditions.
These remarkable lenses allow patients to be nearly entirely free from the need for glasses, except for sunglasses. This is a big breakthrough — one that is often life-changing.
Dr. Almallah also taught a course to his fellow surgeons about treating formerly “untouchable” iris defects and anomalies. What this means for his patients is that he has the skills to offer quality results even in the most difficult cases. He is grateful for the opportunity to train other surgeons in the advanced techniques and maneuvers needed to achieve a good outcome.
