Astigmatism is a very common visual imperfection that affects more than three million Americans each year. If you suffer from astigmatism, you may be wondering if LASIK can correct it. While glasses and contacts can provide relief, you are likely looking for a more permanent solution.
The good news is that at Susskind & Almallah Eye Associates, our experienced ophthalmologists can successfully treat most cases of astigmatism using LASIK surgery.
What is Astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a refractive vision error, just like nearsightedness or farsightedness. The symptoms of astigmatism include:
- Blurry vision
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Halos around lights
- Headaches or eyestrain
- Constant squinting
If you have astigmatism, your eye is shaped more like an egg than a perfect sphere. This shape causes a problem with the way that your eyes process light. Because of the irregular shape, light is not focused on a single point in your eye, which can cause vision difficulties. You may be born with astigmatism or develop it later in life. While you will likely notice the symptoms, astigmatism can also be detected during a routine eye exam.
How Does LASIK Treat Astigmatism?
Some cases of astigmatism are not severe enough to require treatment. However, if your astigmatism is bothersome or interferes with your daily activities, you may wish to treat it with LASIK eye surgery.
Most cases of astigmatism can be fully corrected with a LASIK procedure. Astigmatism often occurs alongside myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness), both of which can also be treated with LASIK.
A LASIK treatment to correct astigmatism is very similar to a regular procedure. In a traditional LASIK procedure, a corneal flap is created on your eye so that a laser can correct the shape of your cornea.
To treat astigmatism, the laser reshapes the inner layer of your cornea to correct the egg-like shape of your eye. This allows your eye to take in light and focus it into one clear point, eliminating blurry vision. The LASIK procedure is painless and only takes a few minutes.
Candidates for LASIK Astigmatism Treatment
LASIK surgery may be right for you if you want to eliminate the vision problems associated with astigmatism. Your candidacy for LASIK can only be determined through a thorough eye exam with an experienced eye doctor. In general, you may be a candidate for LASIK if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have generally healthy eyes free of infection
- Have had the same prescription for at least 2 years
- Wish to treat astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness
- Want an alternative to glasses and contacts
LASIK can treat most degrees of astigmatism. However, if you have a very high astigmatism, our ophthalmologists will evaluate your candidacy for LASIK correction as well as your potential need for a follow-up LASIK treatment.
