AcrySof® Toric Cataract Replacement Lens
for Patients with Astigmatism
Ocean and Monmouth Counties, New Jersey
When cataract surgery is necessary, it's good to know that there are options available. Patients rarely realize that there are now advances in lens technology allowing for the correction of astigmatism as well as nearsightedness. The AcrySof® Toric lens from Alcon is designed to correct both.
Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure where an eye surgeon removes the clouded lens (cataract) and replaces it with a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL). If you have an astigmatism, it is possible that you will still have blurred and distorted vision after surgery because the standard IOL cannot correct corneal astigmatism and you might still have the need for glasses and contacts.
What is Astigmatism?
For patients who do not know what an astigmatism is, it is when the front surface of the eye (cornea) is not curved properly and usually one half is flatter than the other with one area steeper than it should be. Astigmatism occurs in children and adults and it is fairly common. It is usually present at birth, but can also develop after an eye operation or an injury to the eye. It belongs to a group of eye conditions called refractive errors. Myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and presbyopia (aging of the lens in the eye) are also types of refractive errors.
Toric Lens Implants do not correct Presbyopia, and even though they correct astigmatism after cataract surgery, most patients will still need reading glasses or bifocals for near vision tasks such as reading and intermediate vision functionality such as computer work.
If you have a reasonable amount of astigmatism, the physician and staff will discuss a Toric Lens Implant with you, as it may be a good option for providing you with the best possible vision without needing eyeglasses to see at distance after your Cataract Surgery.
The Acrysof® Toric Lens offers patients a precise approach to correcting corneal astigmatism, typically without any additional surgeries. Please contact us to find out if the Toric Lens Implant would benefit you.
