What happens during the LASIK procedure?

Your surgeon will create a flap on the top layer of the cornea with an instrument called a microkeratome. With this flap folded back, your surgeon will be able to use the laser to sculpt your cornea so it is better able to focus light on your retina. Once the sculpting is done, the flap is replaced.

How do I know if I am a candidate for LASIK?

If you are over 18 years old, have healthy corneas, have not had a significant increase in your prescription in the last year, and have no pre-existing eye health issues, then you are very likely a good candidate for LASIK. Other chronic health issues may prohibit you from getting the surgery. Pregnant women are generally not good candidates. Certain occupations prohibit LASIK, so be sure to check with your employer before getting the procedure.

What alternatives do I have if it is determined that I am not a good candidate for LASIK?

There are a number of surgical and non-surgical alternatives for those who are unfit for LASIK. It may be as simple as letting some time pass before one can become a candidate for the procedure. The right alternative for you will depend largely on the factor or factors which prevent you from getting LASIK. Your eye surgeon will be able to advise you after performing your comprehensive eye exam.

What sort of potential complications should I be concerned about?

Complications are very rare, but may include infection, over- or under-correction, flap dislocation, dry eye, or night vision problems. Most of these can be avoided as long as you follow your eye surgeon’s post-op instructions.

With all the different types of LASIK, how do I know which one is right for me?

A number of variations on the traditional LASIK procedure have been developed over the past two decades. There is Custom Wavefront LASIK, Epi-LASIK, LASEK, and IntraLase "bladeless" LASIK, just to name a few. You may or may not be candidate for some of these procedures. After your comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor will be able to recommend which variation is ideal for you.
