You may have heard or read about eyelid surgery being offered by cosmetic surgeons, as a way of giving the eyes a younger, more alert look. However, eyelid surgery is also done sometimes to improve vision.
The medical name is blepharoplasty and it can be done on either the upper or lower eyelids. As we age, gravity and our repeated facial expressions gradually cause sagging and fine lines around the eyes. And puffy pockets can develop beneath the eyes. It tends to create a tired look when we may not feel tired at all.
By removing excess skin and fatty tissue, the eyelids can be reduced and the eyes given a more youthful look.
Upper Eyelid can Interfere with Vision
With some eyes, the upper lid can droop so much as to obscure part of the upper visual field. You can have that definitively diagnosed through a visual field test such as is given in diagnosing glaucoma. You sit looking with one eye at a time into a white, round simulation of a full visual field. The machine flashes very small points of light at random places in this field, and each time you see a flash, you press the button on a small device in your hand.
The device is connected into the machine and records each time you press the button. When you have completed this test for both eyes, the machine prints out a diagram of your left and right visual fields. It shows the areas where you saw the lights and pressed the button, and any areas where you didn’t see the light, and therefore didn’t press the button.
In this way, Dr. Almallah can determine how much the drooping upper eyelid is obscuring your vision.
Recovery from Eyelid Surgery
At the end of your procedure, Dr. Almallah will apply a lubricating ointment and perhaps a dressing. At first there will be some swelling and bruising but it will subside in a week or so.
- You will have several follow-up appointments so Dr. Almallah can monitor your recovery
- He will give you instructions as to when you can resume normal activity and exercise
- You should wear dark sunglasses until healing is complete
- Dr. Almallah will instruct you on how to care for any dressings and how to use any eye drops
- The small incisions in the upper eyelid crease will leave only a very thin and barely noticeable scar
The difference in your vision will be evident very quickly without that excess tissue drooping over the eyes. In several weeks you’ll be able to see your rejuvenated appearance, and this will be a long-lasting facial enhancement. Of course, we never stop aging, but the clock has now been set back considerably for your eyes and face.
