Eyelid Cyst

Meibomian glands discharge sebum through tiny ducts along the edges of the eyelids just behind the eyelashes. This oily substance joins a layer of tears, called “tear film,” which nourishes, lubricates, and cleans the outer surface of the eye and protects it from infection. Trouble arises when the duct through which the Meibomian gland drains becomes blocked due to narrowing of the opening or hardening of the sebum. When this happens, the sebum backs up into the gland, causing inflammation and producing a cyst that grows inward toward the inside surface of the eyelid. The walls of the gland may thicken into a firm, rubbery nodule, or “chalazion.” While most cysts disappear without treatment, others may require medication and/or surgery.

Symptoms may include a red lump in your eyelid, pain near the lump, or also swelling of part or the entire eyelid. Be sure that you tell us if you have any changes in your vision. Let us at SUSSKIND & ALMALLAH EYE ASSOCIATES, P.A. help you determine what is best for your situation. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please call us at 732-349-5622. We’re here to help. We are committed to providing you with the best possible eye health care. We have the experience and expertise to answer you ocular health questions.

Pre-Lasik Evaluation

As popular as LASIK eye surgery for the correction of refractive errors has become, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure. With this in mind, a thorough pre-surgery appraisal should take about an hour. It should include tests that measure the quality and quantity of the patient’s tears; the size of his or her pupils in dim and regular light; and the thickness, shape, and surface quality of the corneas. Results that reveal an unreasonable risk (such as corneas that are too thin) may be good reason to explore other options. Patients’ medical histories are also vital in that conditions and drugs that affect healing (such as diabetes and corticosteroids) can render LASIK a poor choice.

Let us help you to find out if Lasik is an option for you. At SUSSKIND & ALMALLAH EYE ASSOCIATES, P.A., we stress preventive health care for the entire family. Your eyesight is priceless – protect it! With regular eye care by a qualified ophthalmologist, patients today can avoid vision-threatening diseases and see the world clearly – through a healthy pair of eyes. Please call 732-349-5622 to schedule an appointment for a comprehensive eye examination. Patient education and awareness are keys to prevention and early detection of eye health problems.
